APPLE DUATHLON - In a separate post we predicted that the women's race will be more competitive than ever. In this one, we are saying the same about the men's race.
Here are some of the guys who should go very, very fast on Saturday:
DAVID THOMPSON - Seasoned pro, DKT has raced on this course on seven prior occasions. Guess how many times he's won? That's right: 7! He is the only man to break 1:20 here (1:19:57 in 2010). A win would be the 102nd of his multisport career....

APPLE PREVIEW - Minnesota's longest running multi, the Apple Du, will celebrate its 34th birthday on Saturday. It will also feature one of it's deepest fields ever.
Here, we'll tell you about the women's field. We'll talk about the men in a separate post.
In 2015 an unprecedented nine women managed to break the 1:40 on Apple storied 5K- 20.5 mile - 5K course. (Apple was more competitive than Nationals!) Seven of those national class women--Suzie Fox, Sheena Dauer, Kortney Haag, Lisa Lendway, Christina Roberts, Jenn Scudiero and Manuela Knispel--are returning. (Unable to return are 2015 winner Elaine Nelson, who is preggers, and Nicole Heininger, who has relocated to the Southwest.)
Are there at least two more women in this year's field that should break the 100-minute standard?
Yup! ...

GEAR WEST DUATHLON COVERAGE - Pre-race faves Matt Payne and Suzie Fox lived up to expectations on Sunday at the 24th Gear West Duathlon, which was contested in uncharacteristically perfect conditions. (Temps were near 70, the sky was cloudless and wind wasn't an issue.) But they accomplished their victories in different ways.
Payne, who would record his 42nd multisport win, showed why he is a two-time US Duathlete of the Year. He led from the get-go and steadily built his lead until his final margin of victory was 2:41. It was his first race of the year and he admitted that "It hurt like hell!"
Payne is now a three-time GWD champ...

Chattanooga 70.3 Race Report - A beautiful day in Chattanooga! I absolutely love this place.
Unfortunately, I didn't earn an opera singer escort today. I was out of the water in 21st place, and biked/ran my way to 8th place in a field dominated by fast runners. Let me tell you, it is HARD to run down runners. I tried with all of my might!
Swim: Non-wetsuit for pros and minimal current in the river swim (closed dam). The swim course also went upstream for the first 350m which all together, yielded typical swim times by all athletes.
Transition: Was exiting T1 with my bike when I realized I still had my swim skin around my hips. Had to run the bike back and chuck it near my spot. I've always been baffled by how that could possibly happen to athletes (until today). (Forgot to tell you that AC :)). ...

GEAR WEST DUATHLON - Perfect weather--68 degrees, negligible wind-- greeted the 230ish participants this morning. 2015 Minnesota Triathletes and Duathletes of the Year Matt Payne and Suzie Fox (photo) repeated as champions and five AG records were lowered. Between them, Matt and Suzie have amassed 76 multisport wins. Race coverage and photography on Tuesday. - RESULTS

5th Annual ESPRIT DE SHE DUATHLON - Fast masters claimed the Top 4 spots at this year's run-bike-run: 1. Jennifer Fitzharris-Funk, 41 - 1:04:20, 2. Jody Quesnell, 49 - 1:05:24, 3. Anne Grabowski, 49 - 1:06:48, 4. Tracy Serreyn, 52 - 1:07:09, 5.Kelly Heltemes, 38 - 1:09:23. The event boasted 581 finishers. RESULTS ....
