Chasing "Mystery Kid"....

MIKIE-RUN.gifED. On Tuesday, MTN posted stuff about Mike Ward, highlighting the fact that he is a tri star on the rise. In addition to his multisport success, he is also a blogger (mikeward.com), dog lover, beer maker, winter hiker/survivalist and ultramarathoner. Posted here is his Wild Duluth 50K race report. Enjoy. Race Day: Saturday, October 17, 2015 – 8am

Time for the pain. The Superior Hiking Trail brings the pain every time. It isn’t very runable, so why not try to run 31 miles as fast you can on it? I love this very fun race, though, and couldn’t resist registering for it to defend my title....

Duluth's Dynamic Daughters....

michelle-and-bettina.gifYesterday we posted stuff about Josh Blankenheim, Nick Nygaard and Mike Ward, Duluth's top male triathletes. It's only fair that we talk about that great city's most successful female swim-bike-runners. With national star Elaine Nelson on maternity leave in 2016, here are four other talented women who make Duluth proud every time they toe the line at a triathlon:

Talented Triumvirate....

joshie-B.gifFor the last two-and-a-half decades, three men have dominated Duluth's multisport scene: Brian Bich, Rhett Bonner and Rod Raymond. These guys are now, or about to be, fifty-genarians and for the last few seasons have not raced as much as in years' past. They've been busy. Brian, a multiple national champion, two-time US AOY nominee and 2008 US MOY, has been busy parenting. Bonner, also a former AG national champ, has been busy saving lives, and Raymond has been busy entrepreneuring like a banshee. Rod seems to open a new restaurant every few days.

While Duluth's original Big 3 have chosen to step out of the limelight for a while, a new triumvirate of local triathletes has taken their place: Josh Blankenheim, Nick Nygaard and Mike Ward....

Ironman 70.3 Puerto Rico – Race Report

I was debating all off-season whether to get my feet wet racing in 2016 in Puerto Rico or Monterrey, Mexico. Up until about a month ago, I still hadn’t decided which race I was going to compete in. I had talked to fellow pro Heather Lendway about the possible competition that would be in attendance at either event, and learned it would be stacked either way. I considered this race as a “mini vacation” of sorts, so I ultimately decided on PR due to its tourism and ease of travel (it’s a U.S. territory).

I knew it was going to be hot and humid. I also know I’m not the best racer in those conditions. Going into the race, there was a lot of uncertainty as to how my offseason training was going to prepare me for this race, how the weather would affect me, and how my new nutrition plan would work. Everyone seemed to be confident in me. Everyone, that is, except myself. I knew a lot of variables had to come together for me to have a good day....

Have You Had Your Ecotherapy Today?

While most everyone knows spending time outside makes you happier, we now have scientific proof that it also makes you healthier. Therapy that uses nature as a tool, termed “ecotherapy”, has long been gaining prominence amongst mental health professionals. Studies have shown lowering of depression scores by over 70 % among test subjects taking a walk in nature compared to walking in a shopping mall. While many athletes may say “I’m not prone to depression” and “My workouts should be stressful to be effective”, it is prudent to examine the chemical and physiologic basis of stress and...
