PREVES - The two most competitive duathlons in the US will take place in the next two weeks, and both of them are contested right here in Minnesota. We're talking about the GEAR WEST DU, the 24th edition of which will take place in Orono next Sunday, and the APPLE DU, at 34, our state's oldest multisport event, the following Saturday.

American Gwen Jorgensen (St. Paul, MN) claimed the win at Saturday’s ITU World Triathlon Series Yokohama race (her fourth straight at this event), with Ashleigh Gentle (AUS) and Ai Ueda (JPN) earning the other two podium spots. With no other Americans finishing on the podium, Katie Zaferes will likely earn the final spot on the women’s U.S. Olympic triathlon team thanks to her ranking in the USA Triathlon Objective Rankings System—Gwen Jorgensen and Sarah True earned the first two spots at last year’s Rio Test Event....

OAKDALE DUATHLON XIV - "Holy buckets!" Mike Buenting exclaimed, then added with equal exuberance, "I can't feel my fingers!" He had just finished 2nd at yesterday's Oakdale Du and his frozen, gnarled hands were useless. Like many of the 136 folks who braved the frosty conditions (temps in 30s with wind chill knocking it back into the 20s), Mike had lost valuable time in transition trying to snap (T1) then unsnap (T2) his helmet....

Well, spring is here (in most parts of the country), and the tri/duathlete’s thoughts turn to a variety of things: the race schedule for the upcoming season, the training program that will get you ready for the races that you are planning to do, and yes, equipment. Race schedules and training programs are constants from season-to-season, of course. Thoughts on equipment vary, depending how long you have been in the sport, how much equipment you already have, what kind of shape it is in, and so on and so forth. This column is primarily aimed more at those who are new or relatively new to the sport, but there are a few words of advice that might help out some of the more experienced types as well....
