POY Talk....

DSC_0194-1.pngLAKE WACONIA TRIATHLON - The young 2016 multi season here in Minnesota has been marked by several outstanding performances, but none have been, in our opinion, outstandinger than the one's turned in by BF/GF Sean Cooley and Hanna Grinaker last Sunday at the 27th annual Lake Waconia Triathlon. We'd be flabbergasted if these amazing efforts were not nominated for Performance of the Year at season's end.

We'll start with Hanna (photo by Drew Frakes). When she blasted out of T2 on the heels of leader Lisa Lendway, those who watched knew that the game was over. Minnesota's Uber-Rookie ran at UW-Madison and few if any of her amateur peers can match strides with her. The question at that point was not whether she would win, but by how much. A course record was a foregone conclusion. Only injury could get in the way....

The day’s events began with the elites on the standard 10-kilometer run, 40-kilometer bike, 5-kilometer run course, where Lieto posted the day’s fastest time of 1 hour, 58 minutes, 48 seconds to win a national title in only his second-ever duathlon. Liberty Olympic Race Report - So I have been procrastinating on writing this race report, I guess because a planned DNF is kind of anti-climactic. I have still not been running as I continue to recover from what has been going on with my leg, so the plan for Liberty was to race the swim and bike, take the opportunity for some transition practice, and have a solid brick training effort. Part of my reasoning in choosing this race when I was figuring out my race calendar was to get a solid earlier season Olympic distance race under my belt before the NYC Tri on July 24th. I’ve never raced Liberty before, but knew it was a long-time favorite local race so I was looking forward to what it had to offer....

Ironman 70.3 Barcelona Race Report - It’s finally time for a very belated race report.  Last fall I knew I was going to be headed to Israel for memorial week for a wedding.  Knowing it would be tough to train while there I wanted to make this a mid-season mini break.  Looking over my race options I found Barcelona 70.3, Chattanooga 70.3 and Rev 3 Knoxville.  If I did a 70.3 a low training week/time off would make the most sense.  After checking out the course for Barcelona I couldn’t stop thinking about doing that race.  A rough swim in the Mediterranean Sea, a hard bike with climbs into the mountains and a flat run along the beach, a perfect course for me!  I wasn’t sure if it would be worth it with the extra travel hassle, jet lag and having to lug a bike around Israel.   When I found a flight that stopped in Barcelona for less than 200$ more than I was going to pay to get to Israel, I was sold, this was going to be epic....
