Ryan Nips Brooks For MI....

ryan-awards.gifMinnesota Multisport Awards – Men’s MOST IMPROVED was one of the more hotly debated categories. In the end, Ryan Bailey won the award, though by the narrowest margin over Brooks Grossinger.

Here is a cursory explanation of how this award was determined:

CHAP ACHEN – Achen’s improvement was definitely nomination-worthy, but the Selectors ranked him generally in the 12th-15th range, though one supporter had him in the 10th spot. That the 45-year-old was never tested head-to-head with the other MOY nominees, nor did he beat any eventual Team MN athletes along the way hurt his chances to win this award.

NATE HOFFMAN – When figuring out this category the Selectors look at a nominee’s movement within or toward Team Minnesota. A few Committee members ranked Nate 10th, the rest ranked him #11. A star duathlete, had his tri performances—5th at Buffalo Olympic, 10 minutes behind the winner; 10th at Heart of the Lakes, nine minutes...

Ready For a New Life...

On June 25, 2006, I went to jail. It turned out to be one of the best days of my life.

I had been in a downward spiral since my marriage ended in 1997, and I didn't know what to do or how to live. I was lost and empty. I'd been a heavy drinker for years, but when I discovered meth at age 31, all it did for me was prove the pick me up I needed to keep drinking.

Nine long, hard years of daily meth use followed, along with continued drinking. During that period, I lost relationships with everyone, thinking I was protecting them from seeing how just how bad I'd become.

The day I was arrested I was 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 82 pounds (I thought I looked pretty good!) But when I look at my booking photo today—I carry it in my purse to remind me—I know just how wrong I was....

Payne Win's LDAOY...

kort-bike.gifMinnesota Multisport Awards – The weekend before the MMA presentation it was assumed by all of the Selectors that Matthew Payne would win Long Distance Athlete of the Year award. He was the clear choice.

Then Cathy Yndestad won the Life Time Soma Half in Tempe, Arizona, ripping a 4:32:45, the fastest amateur female 70.3 clocking of the year for a resident Minnesotan.

After much discussion it was determined that Matt would retain the award, albeit by a very slight margin. Here’s how the Committee compared Matt’s and Cathy’s long distance resumes: ...

Payne Train is DOY...

dani-and-diane.gif(YndeCam Photo - Dani and Diane leading the way at Du Nationals.)

Minnesota Multisport Awards - Never in the history of the MMAs has there been so many viable DUATHLETE OF THE YEAR candidates. Limiting the number of nominees to just four meant that several very successful run-bike-runners did not make the cut.

Like who, you ask?

Like 2013 US DOY Jenn Scudiero (three wins in seven du starts), 2009 US DOY Kevin O'Connor (four starts including a podium at Sprint Nationals), Bennett Isabella (six du starts, four Top 5s, podium at Sprint Nationals), Brian Sames (five starts, three podiums including one win), Jas Carlson (five starts, two runner-up finishes), Joe Johnson (seven starts, three podiums, including ...

"...Gave My Dog a Mohawk"...

miles-mohawk.gifBy Suzie Fox (suz--news.blogspot.com)

I survived the toughest 2 weeks of the year, my mini-off season! Actually it wasn't so tough this year. In just under 24 months (Sept 9, 2012 - Sept 7 2014) I did 4 Ironmans, an open marathon, and countless other distance tris, dus, cycling time trials and running races so my body definitely needed a little break. I always miss training and usually I start sneaking light workouts in by the end of the first week but this year I happily committed to a full 14 days off to recover without a single swim, bike or run workout. I took quite a few full days of rest, did half a dozen yoga classes, took my "big" dog on long walks, and tried 2 crossfit WODs. I am big believer in active recovery and often times find that for me light swims, bikes, walks, core workouts or yoga classes recover my body better then total rest towards the end of a resting/recovery period....
