Triathlon Tips for an Enjoyable & Safe Day of Racing
Training for triathlon is a lot of work, swimming, biking and running. The one thing that is overlooked is how to train and be prepared for your arrival at a triathlon event site. Racing should be fun, enjoyable and something you look forward to. Reduce the stress on race day and be safe by considering the following triathlon tips. These tips will make sure your training pays off well while racing.
Tip: Check out and know the course ahead of time
At a minimum, you need to be familiar with the bike and run courses before you leave for your triathlon event. Some courses are marked very well while others could do a better job. If it's a multi lap course, know who many loops you need to do for your race. Not all bike courses are closed to...

Bring a one-shot tire repair inflator and hide it
Melissa Rollison, 2011 Ironman 70.3 world champion, uses electrical tape to attach an Effetto Mariposa sealant-and-inflator unit between her elbow pads. By stacking it behind her hydration system, she is able to hide it from the wind effectively. Rachel McBride brings a Vittoria Pitstop inflator can tire sealant canister by taping it to her top tube right in front of her seatpost.
Do it yourself: These handy do-it-all tire repair tools are the fastest way to repair a flat and get back on the road. They don’t work on every flat or inflate the tire back to 120 PSI, but they work for most tubular punctures. Tape one to your bike and shield it from the wind by placing it in front of your seatpost or behind a front hydration system....

The Infamous Test Ride
By Bonnie Ridesalot
We are bike addicts and not ashamed to admit it. We are in good company here so I think that is not only a safe statement but a common understatement amongst our fellow athletes. So there we were, checking out the latest and greatest bikes. We mulled and toiled over gear, upgrades vs. a new bike, stiffness, kilograms, shifters and on and on. My husband is very happily married to me. Anyway, we decided to go for a test ride, you know- that fatal moment when the sky becomes the limit because you just laid your eyes on a carbon beauty that is sure to make you the faster than ever before from a turbo combination of pride and excitement. The universe has no bounds for what that baby can do for you. Price? Hah! Money can’t buy happiness unless it has two wheels...

....h i L L s....
By Bonnie Precipice
Lots of things can happen during a training run , especially when you’re going long distances- from PR’s and flats to bonking, dog bites and thunderstorms. But nothing, should I say nothing, tops the gargantuan hill climb.
So there you are running along and all things in life are good and pure. You’ve found your groove. You begin having that dangerous thought, “I feel good!” Smiling like a sucker, you relax into your stride, round the bend and like a fourteen pitch roof, you see looming before you the mother lode of all hills.
But what of the hill? ....

The Footstrike Debate
By Bobby McGee (for USATriathlon.org)
Which is a better way for me to run, midfoot or heel striking? The answer is a definite and resounding, yes to either one.
Currently there is no research that proves either is better. All we know is that faster runners in shorter events, up to about 10k, tend to run with either their midfoot touching first and in most cases then lowering their heel like applying an L-shaped piece of carbon fiber onto the surface for elastic loading....

Overcoming Muscular Imbalance: When One Side of Your Body Is Stronger Than the Other
By Jonathan Jensen (jonnyj), OptumHealth Performance Coach![]()
Throughout my years of coaching and corrective exercise I have consistently found an area that has not been assessed or has been completely overlooked....muscular imbalance. What I mean by that is, when a right side muscle group is much stronger than the left side (or vice-versa). An example would be the right side quadriceps group much stronger than the left side. This typically culminates in two ways: first, it leaves a gap in performance due to faster fatigue on the weak side, and a higher work load on the stronger. The second is injury. As mentioned, you will have a higher work load on the stronger side which can lead to overuse injuries, but more commonly what I have seen...
