Ironman Lake Tahoe Race Report  Overall impressions:  Absolutely stunning venue and it was a great place to both race and vacation.  This is definitely not the place to ever go fast... ever (ever).  There were quite a few hiccups, probably since it was the inaugural edition.  I'm glad I did it but for this course, I'm one and done.

Before the race:  My wife Megan (who raced as well) and family spent 5 days before the race staying on the lake and we had a chance to bike, run, and swim much of the course.  The weather was nice and the water was always very pleasant for training.  The visibility is shocking - at least 60 feet and you can see all types of sea life from trout to crayfish.  I increased my Gatorade consumption, not to hydrate for the race, but so I had enough bottles to build and deploy an extensive network of crayfish traps filled with bacon hoping to catch some of the 280 million that live in Tahoe... but that effort was unsuccessful.  Part of the bike course was not accessible for the week leading up since it...

Heather's Words...

Heather and BFFEat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat

By Heather Lendway

I’m not sure exactly what made him think racing 125K triathlon would be a good idea but approximately 10 months ago the boyfriend, Patrick (photo L with me), signed up to race Leadman 125 Bend.   I knew I had no interest in doing a HIM or IM, but this basically modified HIM with a 2.5 K swim, 106K Bike and 16.5K (later changed to only a 13K) run, was quite intriguing and definitely suited my specialties.  By the time April rolled around I pulled the trigger; we would both be racing the Leadman 125....

Lead & Tread...

HeatherLEADMAN EPIC - BEND - St. Paul's Heather Lendway and Columbia Heights' Matt Payne clearly demonstrated their Star Power in Bend, Oregon last Saturday. Lendway collected her 10th career win in the 125K tri and Payne finished 2nd overall in the 250K.

The distances, though longer than Half and Full IM, are configured to produce finishing times similar to those turned in on 70.3 and 224K courses. This is accomplished by significantly lengthening the swim and bike legs, and shortening the run portion. The point is to create a Half or full IM experience that is easier to recover from.

Heather's time on the mountainous course was an amazing 4:29:50, which was 26:13 faster than the women's winning time (on a slightly different course) in 2012, and 7:40 faster than her nearest challenger, former Canadian pro Donna Phalen. Four Minnesota women rocked Top 10 performances: Lendway (1st), CathyYndestad, last year's 250 amateur champ (3rd - 4:44:39), Patti Schmidt-Iverson (8th-5:06:43, an almost 31-minute improvement on her 2012 time here) and Julie Hull (9th - 5:18:32).

Burrito Union 5 & 10-Hour Race Report - The weekend kicked off nicely on Friday afternoon with my two Burrito Union 10 Hour Triathlon team mates, Nancy and Matt, coming over to my house to add my bike, camping & triathlon bags to the huge pile in the back of the truck. It was a beautiful day and we were off on a 3 hour drive to beautiful Superior Park in Wisconsin for the triathlon time of our lives. The Burrito Union is a unique event in that it does not consist of a single race. It is a continually revolving sprint distance triathlon that repeats as many times as the racers can fit into the 10 hour period or for those whom prefer to enjoy the cookout celebration atmosphere after a good race, as few as one triathlon.*Duly noted that one triathlon is a lot of work!  ....

"Did I Mention It Was Raining?"

rhiannonBy Rhiannon O'Connor

Ironman Wales was held for the third time this year in the Welsh town of Tenby, Pembrokeshire.  This is an area that my family and I spent many summer vacations when I was growing up.  We stayed in the area and played on many of the beaches that the bike route passed.

My father's family is from the town of Narberth, which we passed twice on the bike route, and is also at the top of one of the major hill climbs.  When I decided to do an Ironman this was the one that called out to me.  Little did I know....
