The King Boreas Winter Triathlon will take place on Sunday, January 31st starting at 10am at Phalen Golf Course in Saint Paul.  The distances are 5k Run, 17k Bike, 7.5k Ski.  Nestled in Saint Paul’s East side, the venue is 20 minutes from MSP International Airport and 5 minutes from the heart of downtown. The race is an official Saint Paul Winter Carnival event and is made possible through the support of it’s fantastic sponsors; HED Cycling, Now Bike and Fitness, Finn Sisu, Team RWB, Insight Brewing and Clif nutrition.  

The course will consist of an rolling off road 5k run counterclockwise around Lake Phalen, a 5 lap off road bike leg which will feature the famous HED “Fly-over”, and a single lap of the Phalen Golf Course Ski course.  A preview of the course will be held on Saturday...

January 30th.  Athletes will be able to test their bikes and skis on the course.  Afterwards they can slide into the Phalen Golf Chalet for packet pick up and a special sampling party sponsored by Insight Brewing.  On Sunday, Insight will be back supplying post race beverages in the chalet.  100% of Insight Brewing proceeds will go directly to a local Saint Paul charity.

Eligible Age Groups and Awards

Participants have the opportunity to qualify for the 2017 ITU Winter Triathlon World Championship through the 2016 USA Triathlon Winter Triathlon National Championship. It is the policy of USA Triathlon to provide awards only for those age groups which qualify for this level of competition. Age groups will begin with 17-19 and continue in 5-year increments through 80-84. The minimum ages to compete are based on the ITU Competition Rules (appendix A, page 75). 

• For the 2016 USAT Winter Triathlon National Championship, athletes must be 17 by December 31st, 2016.
• For the 2017 ITU Winter Triathlon World Championship, athletes must be 18 by December 31st, 2017.

Please note that this event may have additional categories other than what is listed here. USA Triathlon will only provide National Championship awards for the listed age groups. If you are wishing to compete at this event, but do not meet the minimum age requirement, we encourage you to participate in one of our youth events. Note: this event may allow athletes under 17 to participate. In coordination with ITU rules, they will not be eligible for USA Triathlon National Championship awards.

Team USA Information

The 2016 USA Triathlon Winter Triathlon National Championships in Saint Paul, Minnesota, will qualify athletes for the 2017 ITU Winter Triathlon World Championship at a location TBD. At the Winter Triathlon National Championships, the top 18 in each age group, rolling down to 25th place after applying the age-up rule, will qualify for the World Championships.

The top-20 off-road triathletes per age group in the USA Triathlon winter triathlon annual rankings as of 12/31/16 will also qualify for the world championship. The top 2 are offered a spot rolling down to 20th. RACE WEBSITE
