Rain, Wind & Sportsmanship...

The 3rd edition of the Falls Duathlon was today, April 30, 2011, in usually beautiful Cannon Falls, MN. Two words can describe the racing conditions: wet & windy. One word for those who...

porkBEST OF MINNESOTA: Post-Race Food Results Are In

By Darin Wieneke (MTN Staff Epicure)

MTN is hoping that the BEST POST-RACE FOOD title will become hotly contested in the coming years. If so, we will all be winners! Here are some menu suggestions for a few races:

Twin Cities Triathlon: This race is located in St. Paul and just blocks from West St. Paul and some the best Mexican restaurants in Minnesota (i.e. Boca Chica). I am thinking tostados or tacos would be great. A Mariachi band would also be a sweet addition....

Weekend Newsy & Notesy Stuff...

* Jenny Wilcox is a great athlete and a supremely nice person. We like her a lot, so when she asked us if we would post some information on the running event that she co-founded and directs, we were happy to oblige. Here's what she sent us:

"This year's Nick Clare Memorial Run will be held on Saturday May 7th at 8:30am at the Hastings Area YMCA in Hastings, MN. We have 3 races this year: 2k, 5k, 10mile races. It will be professionally timed by Anderson Race Management. All 10 mile finishers will receive a finishers medal. All of the proceeds from the run go to the YMCA for the Y Partners Program and to the Nick Clare Memorial Scholarship Fund that helps students in need of financial assistance who may not be able to have the opportunity attend college otherwise, in addition to other local non-profits needing financial assistance. It is a non-profit event supporting non-profit organizations and supporting kids for a brighter future." RACE WEBSITE

* Saturday, April 30 - For the second consecutive year, Kevin O'Connor placed 6th overall at the USAT Duathlon National Championships. Other impressive efforts by Minnesotans included Ben Ewers' 2nd in the 65-69M category and John Heinlein's 4th in the 20-24M AG.

* What happened to Du Nationals podium hopeful Jenny Wilcox, who finished 32nd (9th 35-39W)? We don't know. We emailed Jenny asking her to comment on her experience. To be continued...RESULTS

* Overshadowing Chad Millner's dumping of his own men's course record at the 3rd annual Falls Duathlon in Cannon Falls last Saturday, was Ruth Brennan Morrey's surprise win in the women's contest. Finishing 6th a full nine minutes off Julie Hull's victorious pace in 2010, the Rochesterian who doesn't hyphenate her last name, relied on two torrid run splits to keep Hull, who placed 2nd, 15 seconds in arrears. Super Mario's groovy coverage and other commentary will be posted on Monday.... RESULTS.....

Chris & Orville Redenbacher...

chris(Photo - MTN Staff Moviologist Chris Hawes is an avid triathlete, he shaves his head and watches a lot of movies.)

By Christopher Hawes

I had a weekend to myself in March (My girlfriend, Jackie, was gone to Mexico for spring break), so I thought I would rent a bunch of movies that she would not be terribly interested in watching. The four movies I chose to rent, for better or worse, were RED, The American, Book of Eli, and The Expendables. I was mostly happy with three of the four choices.

RED (Retired Extremely Dangerous) stars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malcovich, Helen Mirren, and Mary-Louise Parker. I was expecting this movie to have action, comedy, to be over-the-top, corny, etc. It was all that, and it made me happy. Not a great movie, but I thought it was fun to watch....

Minnesotans in the Desert...

du

jenny2009 US Duathlete of the Year Kevin O'Connor and Jenny Wilcox (photo L), the woman who should have won the 2010 DOY, and thirteen other Minnesotans will be on the starting line of the USAT National Duathlon Championships tomorrow in suburban Tucson (pronounced "2-sahn," not "Tuck-sun").

On paper, Kevin and Jenny have overall (amateur) podium potential. Kevin was 6th overall at Nationals last year and felt he should have done better. This year, two of the Top 3 men are back--2009 US DOY David Slavinski (NJ) and Eneas Freyre (CT). Also, Du Nationals has a history of surprise finishes, heretofore unknowns like Kaleb VanOrt and Matt Sheeks, who have then gone on to stardom and are now pros. Still, don't be surprised if the 40-year-old O'Connor climbs the podium alongside the likes of Slavinski and Freyre, or this year's versions of them.....
