2nd By Seconds...

USAT Age Group Nationals Race Report - In looking back at any race effort you usually can find 16 seconds in a 2+ hour race that you could have cut out. Less fumble in the transitions. Push the swim/bike/run/you-name-it just a little harder. At the end of the day, it's all OK, as long as you made the best combination of emotional, physical, and mental effort you could make on that day. I was beaten by 15 seconds in the USAT National Age Group Triathlon Championships held Saturday August 10th in Milwaukee with a time of 2:22:23 on a beautiful day for racing. I was excited about the result given that I was not where I had planned to be with my run fitness. Optimal fitness, emotional and mental readiness at this level of racing are crucial as finishing places can be separated by narrow margins of just seconds. For example, I've finished second twice (by 24 seconds and now 15 seconds) and won twice (by 12 seconds and 1 minute) at these National Championships...

PP & Ruther Rack Up Frequent Fyler Miles...

mapmapED. When Patrick Parish and Ruth Brennan Morrey are not visible at the races our world isn't right. So, we emailed them to see if what the deal is. Here are their replies.

Howdy MTN Guys,

Yes, my name is still Patrick and I'm still a race-aholic. Recent "incidents" include a couple local bike races, running races, and the duathlon elite world championships in Cali, Colombia. The Cali trip was incredible - representing USA at the World Games with thousands of fans everywhere, meeting top athletes of bizarre sports from around the world, eating fresh papaya, and practicing my Spanish. The race itself was not my...

Weekend Preves...

logoPIGMAN HALF XVI - Our region's oldest half IM will be happen next Sunday at Pleasant Creek State Park near Cedar Rapids. For the second straight year the event will also feature an Olympic distance race. Visit Pigman's WEBSITE to see if registration is still open.

As usual, the half will be ultra-competitive, featuring past champs David Thompson (8x winner) , Kortney Haag, Julie Hull and Suzy Fox. Also returning will be AG course record holders Kevin O'Connor (40-44M), David Lyon (50-54M) and Greg Taylor (55-59M). Yes, we believe that DKT will chalk up his 9th victory here which will be his 17th career half win. Also, we expect 2012 women's champ Suzy Fox to repeat. Because we were impressed with Wisconsin guy Scott Bowe at Ironman Coeur D'Alene, where he was 2nd amateur in 9:12, he's our pick to place 2nd in the men's half.

We're picking a pair of Iowans--Dan Bretscher (2007 US AOY) and Daniella Williams--to win the Olympic race, though we'd love to see former Rochestererian, Joanna Hall steal the women's title....
