"A Dream Come True..."

Boulder-IM6.gifBy Kristin Gustafson

Ironman Boulder is in the books and it was quite a day! I just love race weekend as it is filled with nerves and excitement. My husband and I thought Boulder would be a perfect race to complete our second Ironman together as we lived out in Colorado for about 5 years after we graduated college. The scenery was gorgeous, the venue was perfect, and the volunteers were amazing.

We decided to drive into town pretty much right before the race. We couldn’t get there the two weeks to 10 days before to get use to the altitude like most athletes did. We were just hoping we could survive the altitude and dry heat. The weather was looking HOT for all of us on race day. I do pretty decent in the heat so I felt this could work to my advantage. It is always fun to go get checked in and go to the expo. I love to look at all the gear and just feel the excitement from all the other racers. It was an exhausting couple of days though with having to get checked in, bikes checked, and go to two different locations for the transitions. A lot of walking around which is never good a day before the race....

Nationals + Seven...

GL-2015.gifNot including the USAT National Olympic and Sprint Age Group Championships in Milwaukee, events that have drawn almost 200 Minnesotans, there are seven Gopher State triathlons slated for the weekend of August 8-9.

Insane, right? Especially coming on the heels of an under-utilized weekend, which had only two races--Brewhouse and Minnewaska--and both of them were on Saturday. This kind of stuff has been happening too often, don't you think?

We certainly hope that those Minnesota races--Northwoods, Turtleman (New!), Graniteman-Big Lake and Rainy Lake on Saturday; Green Lake, North Mankato and Wingman on Sunday--that are scheduled for next weekend are successful under the circumstances and encourage everyone who isn't signed up for an event currently, to support one or two of them....

Jorgensen E Um Olimpo!

Americans Gwen Jorgensen (photo) and Sarah True qualified for the U.S. Olympic team this morning (Sunday) by finishing 1st and 4th, respectively, at the test event in Rio de Janeiro. This will be the second-consecutive Olympic team for both. The bottom line for Americans was that a top-eight finish (with only two spots available) meant a spot on the 2016 Olympic team. Katie Zaferes finished sixth, but with two Americans ahead of her will have to go after the third Olympic spot at a yet-to-be announced event in early 2016.

Overall, Great Britain’s Non Stanford and Vicky Holland rounded out the podium.

"It's Gorgeous up Here"....

DKT-BREW.gifBy John Nowacki (duluthnewstribune.com)

David Thompson showed a visible hitch in his step when he began the running portion of the 29th annual Brewhouse Triathlon on Saturday at Island Lake, a product of an ankle injury he suffered playing with his 3-year-old son at a playground.
But even Thompson on a bum leg is better than most triathletes on their best day.

Thompson, of St. Paul, cruised to a course record, covering the 1.5-kilometer swim, 40K bike and 10K run in 1 hour, 56 minutes, 11 seconds, good for his 99th career victory. He now holds the current course record and at the Brewhouse’s previous Pike Lake course.

Bridget McCoy of St. Paul won the women’s race in 2:14:09....
