14th SQUARE LAKE HALF - Red Wing's CHAP ACHEN and Onalaska, Wisconsin's MAGGIE FOURNIER went off the front on Sunday at Square Lake XIV. Chap did his off-the-front going during the bike segment; Maggie waited until the run to do so. The result was a 12:03 margin of victory for Achen, and a 9:21 win for Fournier.
Chap's time was 4:15:43 and his win was his third in five starts this season. Yes, he is receiving serious Master of the Year consideration.
The men's runner-up was 2013 Rookie of the Year nominee LARRY HOSCH, who was making his long course debut. We suspect that he was pleased with his 4:27:48, a great rookie effort.
The final men's podium spot went to ANDREW GISLASON (4:36:49), whose performance avenged his mechanical DNF at Superior Man.
The other two women's podium spots went to LISA CAMPBELL (5:01:49) of Suamico, Wisconsin, and Maple Grove's KRISTINA HEDBERG (5:13:03). Kristina...

This event offers an unparalleled venue; a private wooded YMCA camp nestled on the bluffs of the St. Croix River, a spacious and secure transition area in the heart of the camp, a bike route with pastoral views and rolling hills, and run routes on trails and paths that overlook the stunning river gorge. Though not certified, the course is set in accordance with USAT guidelines.
In addition to beautiful and challenging course, you can expect a supportive atmosphere and homespun charm. The race directors want you to enjoy some of the joy of camp that inspired this race in the first place, so prepare to chuckle, cheer and hand out some high-fives....

15th SQUARE LAKE SHORT COURSE - For te THIRD time in her incomparable career, HEATHER LENDWAY has won the overall amateur title in a triathlon. You had to see it to believe it. Her time on the .5 - 16.5 - 5 Square Lake course was insane: 1:25:11.
Other excelees included TONY SCHILLER, 56, who placed 4th overall in the fastest time ever by a 50-plusser, and LISA LENDWAY, who finished 2nd behind her sister and 4:09 ahead of the 3rd place woman. More words, photos and to follow. RESULTS
FYI, Heather and Lisa Lendway's dad, STOPWATCH GREG (photo L), has endured a double knee replacement. Rumors that he keeps his bygone "Caps" in a jar of formaldehyde on the fireplace mantle are unsubstantiated....
