The Bike is the New Golf Course...

parents-should-exercise-wit.gifBy Brynn Harrington (wellfesto.com)

Mid-way through a recent group exercise class, the teacher lost me.  She didn’t lose me because of some complicated step sequence or insanely long set of burpees; I mentally checked out because of a few words she kept saying over and over.  “Come on!  Get that body ready for your winter beach vacation!  Think about how you want to look at those holiday parties!  PICTURE HOW YOU’LL LOOK IN THAT DRESS!”

“THAT DRESS?”  My brain couldn’t focus on an image of some random dress hanging in my closet.  All I could think about was my three-year-old daughter hearing and trying to process those words....

Impact Weekends...

HL-flag.gif(Photo - Amateur World Champion Heather Lendway will race at Square Lake and One Last Tri.)

The next two weekends of racing could have a huge impact on the Minnesota Multisport Awards. Here are some of the people that we’ll be keeping a close eye on:

SQUARE LAKE SHORT COURSE (Saturday, September 6) – A great performance, i.e. a podium in an impressive time, for LISA LENDWAY would enhance her chances to receive her second consecutive Most Improved nomination and a possible spot on Team Minnesota. Also, CHAP ACHEN is already being discussed for a Master of the Year nomination. A great performance—win or podium—could seal the deal.

IRONMAN WISCONSIN (September 7) – Team Minnesota positions could be affected for SUZIE FOX (photo on page 2.) and NICOLE HEININGER. Great efforts could bump them up the list AND could even result in one of both women receiving a Triathlete of the Year nomination. (Both women are already being discussed for TOY candidacy.)

Also, the Master of the Year category could be affected. The battle between 50-54W stars HEIDI–MILER and TRACY SERREYN should be epic. We see sub-11-hour performances for both women. The winner of the battle will almost certainly receive a MOY nomination.....

"The Human Body Makes No Damn Sense"...

grumpy-old-man09.gifBy Matthew Payne (mattew-payne.blogspot.com)

(Friday, August 29) - Well damn... it's Labor Day weekend and the tri season is all but over. My July and August races were a mixed bag, although some of that is due to higher expectations from doing so unexpectedly well in the early part of the season. One of these days I'll get this periodization crap figured out and avoid peaking in early June. But until then, expect more of the following...

Lake Waconia Tri

I don't remember much about this race other than how I felt before and after it. The whole week leading up to the race I had a sore throat and just generally felt like shit. Race morning was no different and I woke up feeling like total garbage, but being a dumbass I decided to go ahead and race anyway.

I ended up racing surprisingly well given the circumstances and took the win. But the real win was that racing somehow miraculously cured my illness. I literally felt better after the race than any time in the 5 days before. And I don't mean after as in a few hours after finishing when I'm cleaned up and fed. I'm talking about standing...

Nothing Scares Her Anymore...

home-alone.gifBy Suzie Fox (suz--news.blogspot.com)

About a week before an Ironman I start to get a little anxiety about the mass swim start, it is very violent and crowded to say the least. However after Kona and IM Cabo I am not nervous about the Wisconsin start this year. My heart rate will still be higher in the first 5 to 10 mins of the swim then it will be the entire day and I will still have to be attentive and swim defensively with my arms protecting my head. Two years ago before IM WI I was absolutely terrified of the swim start but after 3 IMs in the bank and the chaos of my last two starts I feel like Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone running out his front door shouting, "Hey! I'm not afraid anymore!"

I was trying to find footage of the mass swim start at the 2014 IM Los Cabo and I ended up finding coverage of the entire event and it makes me want to go back and race there so bad! Anyway the mass beach swim start is at 7:15 and it still gives me chills. It is beautiful and horrifying at the same time and was 5 times more frightening than a waist deep mass IM start....

Minnesota's Teen Talent...Updated...

nick-klonne.gifThe 2014 Minnesota Multisport Awards are tentatively scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 25 at Gear West Bike and Triathlon in Long Lake. Triathletes Choice Race of the Year voting will begin on September 15, as will the announcing of award nominees. Between now and then MTN will reveal the names of those whom the MMA Selectors are considering as possible nominees in the various categories.

Today we will introduce those who are being considered for 2014 Junior of the Year. These athletes need to have turned in at least three outstanding performances this year. There efforts are measured against the divisional course records of the races they’ve competed in, and against the performances of those who have won the JOY, or been nominated, in the past.

After all the resumes are reviewed, each of the Selectors will recommend four candidates. The four athletes who receive the most support will be announced as the official nominees.

As is always the case with the JOY category, a number of talented teens raced only once or twice during the season and therefore were ineligible for consideration. This year, Racquel Wohlk, Parker Roehl, Nathan Bich and Alyson Welch are in this group....
