First Race!
I finally registered for a race. I’m excited for a true Minnesota spring classic, the Gear West Duathlon. Because Steve Stenzel and I are currently best friends, according to our Christmas Truce, I will race the Gear West Duathlon as an individual and leave him to defend his lustrous relay crown. That said, if for any reason Steve needed me to step in as his relay-mate I’d do it in a heartbeat. Because we’re best friends and we are always there to help one another. Conversely, if our best friendship is annulled because Steve violates the no ‘your mom’ jokes clause, I’d destroy him like a incontinent pigeon destroys the clean exterior of a freshly washed car. But as I said, we are totally best friends for now and nothing will ever come between us except for any violation of our truce. Love you buddy! And a big congrats to Steve, he just raced as part of a relay in the Israman in Israel! Great job pal. If you’ve never had a best friend I really recommend it.

WINNIPEG, Canada, January 25. - THE hundreds of swimmers and fans in the Pan Am Pool yesterday in Winnipeg were treated to a major moment in Masters swimming history, a moment not likely to be repeated or bettered for many years.
Jaring Timmerman became the first person --- man or woman -- to compete in the 105-109 Masters swimming age group, and therefore set world records in the 50 backstroke and 50 freestyle at the Catherine Kerr Short Course Meters Pentathlon....

A football player gave very enthusiastic answers to questions after he made a great play. I guess it made some people uncomfortable. I didn’t see the game, because I don’t watch that sport where heavyset millionaires aggressively hug one another, but it was a whole big thing and everyone had a strong opinion about the vigor of his answers to those questions. I chatted with someone Monday morning about it at masters...

Runners and triathletes are always looking to increase their strength during the offseason so they can improve their performance during the competition season. One of the best ways to do so is to strap on a pair of snowshoes. Many different training intensity zones can be worked while on snowshoes and you will be building strength the whole time. Since snowshoeing uses the same leg muscles as running, it is definitely applicable when it comes time to hit the trail or the road. Tackling hills and surging the pace while running are based on the amount of strength you have in your legs. Courses that have many twists and turns also require strength to accelerate out of the corners and get back up to speed.
