Burlington & Detroit Lakes Stuff...

swimUSAT NATIONALS - Three Minnesota boys and one Minnesota girl Top 10ed in Burlington, Vermont yesterday. The girl was Duluth's Elaine Nelson, who placed 8th in her Nationals debut, and took home a silver medal in her 30-34W AG. For the guys, St. Louis Park resident Dan Hedgecock placed 3rd overall for the second consecutive year. He was crowned 25-29M National Champion. Bloomington's Patrick Parish placed 6th (3rd 25-29M) and Columbia Heights' Matt Payne 10th (35-39 National Champ). This was the Matt's 2nd National title. He won the 30-34M AG in 2010.

Duluth's Brian Bich, 46, once again won the 45-49M AG, placing 21st overall in 2:00:02, which was the 2nd fastest time ever at Nationals by a 45-plusser. The fastest ever was a 1:58 turned in by Bich on this course in 2011.

The overall National champions were Pennsylvania's Brian Duffy, last year's runner-up and 2009 Triathlete Magazine Athlete of the Year, and Atlanta's Haley Chura, who placed 6th overall in her last Nationals appearance two years ago, and 9th the year before that....

Micro-Previews - Without preamble, here are MTN's predictions for Sunday's triathlons:

- 14th PIGMAN HALF - DKT will win for the umpteenth (8th) time. We think that, as a motivating prelude to her IM debut in Madison next month, Kortney Haag will not only share the Winner's Circle with David, she'll set a CR and PR in the process. We're pulling for you, Kort!

Also, we expect Suzie Fox, Minnesota's fastest athlete who owns more than five dogs, to blow away her 70.3 PR. She has raced brilliantly in 2012, and a next level effort on Sunday could solidify a Triathlete of the Year ...

Duluth Lovers & Mexican Vacations...

beth(Photo - Beth Shipston having a wonderful Hair Day.)

DULUTH TRIATHLON - Beth Shipston loves Duluth. It was there that the totally pretty, fun-loving single mom from Thunder Bay did her first triathlon--Brewhouse--and was introduced to baby back ribs, to which she has become irretrievably addicted. Her favorite Post-Czar Russia-inspired burrito restaurant is there, too, as is her favorite craft brewer (Fitger's).

She'll be visiting her favorite American town next Saturday. And eight days after that, as well. On Saturday, she'll participate in the inaugural Duluth Triathlon. Two Sundays hence, she'll to the Superior Man as be a part of a relay team.

She didn't want to choose between these first-year half IMs, so she found a way to do both. How cool is that! ...
