Race Coverage - It was a beautiful and crisp Saturday morning. Light rain clouds shimmered in the distance out and beyond the horizon. Sun glowing behind the clouds. As I exited the hotel that morning I knew, despite anything else, it would be an ideal day to race.
Kingswood Off-Road Triathlon is one of the state's only true off road triathlons. I was stoked that this was my first try at such a thing, and more importantly, my first triathlon of the season (being a race director assistant keeps me from racing as much as I'd like). I loaded up the car and headed west toward Minnetrista...where ironically my wife grew up, and a city which holds a little slice of heaven on Little Long Lake, Kingswood Camp....

Award winning photographer Paul Phillips (photo L) suffered 3 broken ribs, multiple contusions to his head, elbows and wrists, and as yet undetermined injuries to his neck and head when he was hit by a car before the start of the USA Triathlon Age Group Nationals in Burlington, Vermont Saturday.
Phillips was walking in a crosswalk to the motorcycle staging area 30 minutes prior to the 7:30 AM start when a white SUV that had been stopped for the crosswalk reportedly suddenly accelerated and knocked Phillips and his cameras to the pavement.
Phillips was immediately tended to by a passing physician, laid on a board and taken by ambulance to Fletcher Allen Medical Center where doctors took a CAT scan, cleaned his wounds and gave him pain medication.
After returning to his home in Minneapolis Sunday, Phillips regular physician will conduct more tests to see if there was damage to his neck, heart chamber or head....

Maple Grove Dare to Tri / TriStar 111 Preview - We think the name "Maik" is pronounced "Mike." Not sure, though. Maple Grove Tri co-founder/director, Lindsey Kurhajetz (pronounced "Kurr-High-etts"), who was featured in and on Triathlete Magazine's Swimsuit Issue (She was on the cover of the July issue!), thinks that the correct pronunciation is "Make." She's not sure, either.
We suspect that neither one of us is right. It's a German name and those folks talk differently than we do.
We want to pronounce the name correctly because the owner of that moniker, Maik Twelsiek, totally deserves the respect. He's one of the premier long distance triathletes in the Welt (German for "World") today and will be part of the pro field in Saturday's TriStar 111-Minnesota, an exciting European-style bike-heavy companion event to...
