"Despite the Difficulties"...

Kona Race Report - My motto for the summer “There are 2 types of pain: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. Choose wisely.”

This is a long post but an Ironman is a long day... and Kona was particularly eventful for me.

This was my first time to Kona (and second IM), so I figured I could be in for a tough day...

Swim: 56min. Ocean swim with some rolling swell. Nothing crazy but the waves were big enough that even I took a couple gulps of saltwater. I positioned myself next to the inside buoy line, about 3 guys from the front and thought I could muscle my way through the first section to avoid getting stuck in a huge pack of slower swimmers. Only problem, I was surrounded by about 100 guys with the same idea since this is the world champs, ha! So the first 10 minutes was thrashing madness. Hands, elbows and feet hitting you from all directions and everyone swimming way too fast, knowing they would get trampled if any one slowed down. It didn’t really spread out until about the halfway point. But this was about what I had expected, so the fun factor was on full blast and I was excited my time was where I had estimated....

sethmeyers.pngED. Last Monday we introduced the women who are being considered for MOST IMPROVED nominations. One of those talented candidates was JENNA HORNER, of Eden Prairie. A student at George Washington University in Washington, DC, we emailed some questions to her recently. Here are her responses:

1. Comment on your career goals, and whether those may bring you back to MN on a full-time basis.

I am currently majoring in Political Science with a minor is Geography. This past summer I worked as a Field and Political Fellow on Amy Klobuchar's Presidential campaign. I would love to hop back on that campaign if it is around when I graduate, which would bring me back to MN. I am not 100% sure what I want to do and if politics is my path. I have been a mechanic at both Freewheel Bike Eden Prairie and Trek Georgetown and have fallen in love with the bike industry. I could also see myself doing something along that path as well. Like most college students, I’m not sure where I’ll be or what I’ll be doing, but I’m sure everything will work itself out by the time I graduate....

Restorative Stuff...

A big focus of my marathon training has been recovery. It obviously should always be a significant part of any training plan, but I’ve made extra time for this build because of my hamstring injury (now I just need to add more strength training into my schedule!). Here’s a look at my favorite ways to recover.

Swimming
It’s such a chore to get to the pool, right?! A 3,000-yard session is easily a two-hour production when you combine drive time, showering, and maybe a little apres swim in the sauna. But gosh, there’s something about being the water – especially the sunshiny outdoor 50m pool – that’s fantastic for recovery. (I swear I heard on a podcast once that the water pressure per square inch on your body is like wearing compression boots?! But I’m probably making that up! Regardless, swimming is excellent recovery.) ...
