What Foods Will Help You Sleep?

By Dr. A'nna Sewall (triathlete.com)

Whether it’s trouble falling asleep, waking up in the middle of the night, or tossing and turning so much that you wake up exhausted, we’ve all struggled to catch some zzzzz. Nutrition and food play a powerful role in helping you sleep and in your sleep quality. Moreover, poor sleep may be an indicator of low levels of certain nutrients. By making a few changes to your diet, you may score some better sleep.

The nutrients in our food are the building blocks used to make neurotransmitters, which are involved in sleep. That’s why certain food can help you sleep and some foods can hinder your sleep. A healthy diet allows your body to absorb these nutrients and provides the brain with the chemical environment it needs to maintain good sleep. If we don’t give our body what it needs to make the natural chemicals that help us sleep, then we wind up with sleep issues. The good news is you can give your body what it needs to sleep...

“Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.”

By Jenna Horner

Let’s see, where to start. (Yes, that is me in the photo, which appeared on NPR.com on April 1)

The Beginning
March was probably the biggest cluster f*** of my life. One weekend I found livening it up at a college party clueless of what was to come. The next weekend racing my first EDR down in Florida with one of my GW teammates where we first got wind of other schools going online. The next few days I had my last ever in-person classes before classes were canceled for two weeks and I said goodbye to all of my college friends and teammates two months too early. The next weekend I was driving back down to Florida to race again. On hour 7 of the drive that race was canceled. After spending a week of social distancing in Florida it was back to D.C. in hope that we would return to normal classes after the two-week break from in-person classes. That clearly did not happen and now we are here....

Planking & Coffee on Messenger...

Hi MTN Guys:

We talked about submitting a little something or you when we were planking last Saturday (4/18).  I put together a little article and am including some pictures.

Covid-19 has forced many of us to be creative in our isolated circumstances.  We have a special group of ladies who congregate and train together most Saturday mornings.  Our regimen consists of running, planks and bonding over coffee afterwards.  When social distancing recommendations began in March, we began to rationalize how continuing our Saturday runs would probably to be okay, but quickly peeled the scales from our eyes and knew the right thing to do would be to discontinue our cherished gatherings....

How Fast Are You Losing Your Swim Fitness?

ctpswim.png

By Sarah Barker (triathlete.com)

The good news and bad news about taking an extended break from the water.

Well, this is…different. Triathletes now find themselves in a strange spot—specifically, a dry spot. Training for the run and bike, strength training, core work, all continue apace for most of us, even if there are no races on the schedule. But options for swimming have abruptly dried up. Athletes who rely on pools, or even open water in many cases, are anxiously looking at months out of the water, leaving them to wonder, “How fast will I lose my swim fitness?” ...

"There is a Lot to be Grateful For"...

KidsonElaine1.jpg

ED. A perennial member of Team MInnesota, Elaine Nelson has been Duluth's most successful female triathlete for the last decade.

By Elaine Nelson (April 22)

This morning, my kindergarten son’s school art assignment was about “Gratitude”. He was to draw a picture illustrating what gratitude means for him. He drew a picture of our garage / house fire and the firemen putting out the fire. It’s been almost 2 years since that event. Our attached garage and mudroom have been rebuilt, for which we are truly grateful. Then COVID-19 turned everyone’s lives upside down. Fortunately, we are still healthy, but we realize how devastating this virus can be as we read stories online and have a coworker’s family affected with this disease.

At first, I assumed that school would be cancelled through the rest of the school-year and things would get back to “normal” by summertime. Even though the YMCA closed and I couldn’t swim in the pool, I wasn’t too concerned. (No, I’m not brave / crazy enough to swim in frigid Lake Superior in the spring!) I hoped that we would still be able to train and race as usual. Then the race cancellations began: Grandma’s Marathon, Lutsen Spring Trail Race (in May), Apple Duathlon and Buffalo Triathlon, etc. With each cancellation, it quickly became apparent that our summer wouldn’t be the same.

I have still been working, but only 2 days a week, because my husband and I needed to switch off working and taking care of the kids. Our son, Micah (6.5y) is in kindergarten and our daughter, Annalise (3.5y) is in preschool. Learning how to navigate Distance Learning while keeping both kids occupied and entertained presents it’s own sets of challenges and frustrations. Training is also more challenging with both kids. Gone are the days where I would put baby/toddler Micah in the chariot and go for a 2 hour bike ride during his...
