Race Coverage

Words & Images From Willmar...

nathanRace Coverage - Here are some words and images that appeared in Willmar's West Central Tribune.

As rains falls, overall champion Nate Hoffman, front, of Annandale, leads the field out of the Saulsbury Beach parking lot to start the second annual Green Lake Duathlon Saturday morning. Hoffman, competing for the first time at Spicer, won the five miles of running, sandwiching a 13-mile bike, by over seven minutes in 1:07.44.

logoAlbert Lea Triathlon Coverage - Lots of folks avoided this year's race, assuming that Fountain Lake would be too goshdarn cold. The 100-or-so who did accept the challenge were greeted by semi-balmy 65-degree water and no one complained. Some, but not many, even eschewed their wetsuits.

It's not that there wasn't other stuff to complain about, though. Like fierce winds and occasional rain. Acts of God stuff; not bad race management stuff. Stuff that triathletes accept as part of the deal. Thus, complaints were few and half-hearted.

The event, which celebrated it's 7th anniversary, returned to it's original venue, which featured slightly longer routes (.25 swim-20.5 bike, 4.2 run), after a three-year period in which an alternate site ...

Weekend Racing Stuff - Three 2010 Rookie of the Year candidates rocked the Minnesota scene this weekend. Today in Orono at the 19th Gear West Duathlon, tri-sophomore Dan Hedgecock picked up his first career victory. And it was a Biggie! Dan outraced Patrick Parish (2nd), who hasn't lost to a fellow Minnesota amateur since mid-August in 2009, and Matthew Payne (3rd) and a gaggle of other elite....

jvpsh(Photos - L - Judi and Vicki. Vicki won the women's duathlon this morning. Judi was going to race, too, but she's got planetary fascism, or something like that, which makes her feet hurt a lot, so she decided not to. R - We didn't have a picture of men's winner, Nathan Hoffman, so we did the next best thing: post a picture of awesome actor, Philip Seymour Hoffman.)

*Green Lake Duathlon Capsule - A race doesn't have to be big to be totally good.

There were only 51 finishers at the totally good 2nd annual Green Lake Duathlon this morning, which was totally good despite being contested in gray and wet conditions, though the gray wasn't as ..

NEWSY & NOTESY STUFF...

* We got excited when we first glimpsed results from Saturday's 10th annual Oakdale Du. It appeared that despite the dank, goosepimply conditions, records fell like Minnesota Twins batting averages. It appeared that triathlete/Death Metal guitarist Matt Payne, who picked up his 11th career win, took Brooks' course best down by a flabby 53 seconds, and Kevin O'Connor, who placed 2nd overall, set a PR, and an MR, to boot.

It also appeared that AG studs Charlie Roach (50-54M) and Mike Colaizy (60-64M), among others, outdid their divisional predecessors.

We got especially excited by 17-year-old Hannah Strom's (photo L) 4th place overall finish in the women's contest. An avid Nordic skier and occasional multisporter, who really likes Linkin Park and, for some reason, even enjoyed the movie "Mamma Mia!", Strom may be looking at a Junior of the Year nomination at season's end, if she races often enough, that is....

A Well-Kept Secret...

noelle(Photo - Lakes to Pines 2011 women's champ Noelle Androwchowicz.)

By Brian Maas

Race Coverage - It was more spectacular weather for the best kept secret in Midwest triathlons, the Lakes to Pines Triathlon in Park Rapids, MN. In 2010 we were blessed with sunny skies, race temperatures in the 60s, and light winds. Maybe it was the weather in 2010 that led to a record sixty-three people entering. Maybe it was the weather that allowed seven males to go under the previous course record. Five females went under the previous female course record.

In 2010, the male class was won by Mike Fretland of Bismarck, ND. The female class was won by Kailee Fretland, wife of Mike. But they could not make the trip this year. Kailee is preggers with their first child and Mike had nesting duty this weekend. Nesting as in tiling, painting and many other items on Kailee's wish list....
