It's Back!

We are excited to announce the return of the Gear West Duathlon – set for Sunday, June 23rd. It ought to be a warmer and hopefully drier event than from year’s past. The location at the Orono High School will remain and we’ll be keeping many of the features that made the Gear West Duathlon unique, but both the run and the bike courses will be different from before....

Along with the main event, we are adding a shorter, non-competitive Friends & Family option where we hope to encourage new-comers of all ages and abilities to experience the sport. The Gear West Duathlon Long Course will feature a 5km run/30km bike/5km run and all the rules, blood, sweat & gears will apply. The Gear West Friends & Family (Short Course) Duathlon will take place on a shortened 5km run/15km bike/2km run course and participants will be allowed to run and bike together – the idea being that parents and GWDu_Logo1.pngchildren, couples, friends and groups can share in the experience together; not as a relay (that option is available on the Long Course) but side-by-side. Individuals preferring a shorter race are welcome to participate in the Friends & Family Duathlon too.

Due to the addition of new buildings to the Orono school grounds, we’ve had to make changes to the old run course, but we promise the fun and challenging landscape will be familiar to those who have done the Gear West Duathlon before. Both distances will feature a run course of 3km on paved bike paths and 2km of turf and trail behind the Orono High School Athletic Fields. The bike course features many of the rolling county roads that have been used in past events, but in a shorter loop  –  the Long Course bike route will consist of two laps while the Friends & Family course just one.
