"...Super Fast Until it is Not"....

Ironman 70.3 CDA was a fun one! Great course and super spectator friendly!
Came away 16 OA male 2nd in 40-44 AG, pretty stoked with the result, given a quick turnaround from DSM and not a lot of prep time or fitness built.

Swim was beautiful, water temp was around 65 degrees race morning and air temp was 48. Having done Square Lake 70.3 in 2024, conditions were quite similar so I knew it would be chilly on the bike starting out but needed to remember I’ve done it before. And not to worry about it. Had to back off the effort the last few hundred yards as my stomach was starting to turn a little.

I messed around too long in T1, with gloves and arm warmers and eventually just opted to go without anything except ankle smartwool socks. Honestly my feet got a little cold but that was it. My legs did remain quite stiff for the first 25-30 miles, and I imagine it was from being a little cold. The course is super fast until it’s not, a fair amount of long climbs but...

MINI-PREVIEWS - Between now and August 10, Minnesota triathletes have a multitude of in-state racing options. We'd love to see great turnouts at all of these great events. Here they are:

Sunday, July 27 - LAKE REBECCA SPRINT & SUPERSPRINT - Based on current enrollment numbers, this event should draw approximately 250 participants to its legendary venue at Lake Rebecca. A great location for a post race picnic and hangout with friends and family. Great laid-back vibe.  RACE WEBSITE

Sunday, July 27 - 21st CHISAGO LAKES TRIATHLON - Launching its third decade of racing, the CLT had long ago achieved "icon" status. If you've done this event in the past you know that is a first-class event that rivals the international 70.3 series, albeit without the extravagant expense. Approximately 700 athletes are expected to participate. RACE WEBSITE

Sunday, July 27 - HOOT LAKE TRIATHLON - This sprint race should draw close to 200 participants to its Fergus Falls venue. The town is awesome and has many cool things to do and places to see. So think of  Hoot Lake as a "Destination" triathlon.

August 1 - 2 - ALEXANDRIA TRIATHLON - Everything we said about Hoot Lake deserving "Destination Race" status more that applies to  the Alex Tri. A small city, it nevertheless has produced a lot of great triathletes, thus it is one of the regions more...

2025 Chisago Lakes Tri Preview...

DRONEVIEW.png

CHISAGO LAKES 70.3 OBSERVATIONS- The long-range weather forecast for this year's Chisago races looks pretty darn good. Partly cloudy with light winds and  the warmer temps aren't expected to arrive until almost everyone has finished.

The MTN Guys love to make predictions, and we love to be right, but we also love to be wrong, and we've been wrong a lot when prognosticating about the winners of the Chisago Lakes 70.3. Here's some of out favorite examples of that: ...

Worth the Drive...

Timberman Sprint Triathlon Race Report -  For me, the build started back in May after DNF-ing the Clear Lake triathlon (which was changed to a duathlon). Clear Lake was an early season “A” race, and I was having the race of my life until a flat tire with 3 miles to go. So, I took an easy week with no structured training, and then built back up through all of June so I could hit my last two races of the season hard, starting with Timberman.

This was my 3rd time racing the Timberman sprint. It’s a challenging course – the bike is undulating and the run has some short, steep hills at the start and end – but it’s one of those courses that doesn’t slow down times by being hard. Race morning was smoggy from wildfire smoke, and wind was moderate out of the west, but temps were pretty nice for racing.

The swim was a self-seeded time trial start. The water was pretty choppy from the wind, and we’d be heading straight into the waves for the short stretch between the two turn buoys. I started a few people back from Brooks Grossinger, who I met for the first time waiting for the start, and Sean Pickle started right behind me. I was able to dolphin dive a lot at the start and end of the swim and did my best slice through the chop. Ended up with the fastest swim of the day, so solid start to the race.

Like I mentioned, the bike course is undulating and has some tricky sections to navigate while getting in and out of the resort area. I settled into my goal power once I hit the first straightaway and tried to conserve my energy for the uphills and for the long straightaway between miles 8 and 10 since it’s mostly a gradual uphill, and this...
