Sartell & Chattanooga...

Apple Multisport Festival - The 42nd edition of this event, it's second at it's new venue at Sartell High School, took place on Sunday under very cold and windy conditions. Here's how SHAUN JAMISON described his AMF experience on Facebook:

I got 2nd of 3 guys in the 50-59 age group at the Apple Multi Sport festival triathlon. It was 40 degrees F on the bike/run course not counting windchill. It was nicely warm and humid in the pool area for the swim. My toes went numb on the bike course from the cold so I was pleased to find I didn’t unknowingly break them putting on my running shoes.

It was the first time I had to do a porta potty break at a sprint race. It guess I need to stop my input earlier than usual. Old guy problems. I forgot my gels for the bike race, but it all worked out because I had stopped at the Clearwater exit to pick up a gigantic Carmel roll. Thus, I was in the green for carbs....

Rain, Tornado Warnings, Missed Turns & Awesome Volunteers...

By Tevin Neegaard

70.3 Gulf Coast Race Report - My 2025 season opener was one to remember. This race gave us it all weather wise torrential rain showers, gusty winds, and tornado warnings that would later call the race for a majority of participants due to safety reasons.

Swim: Cancelled

Bike: The rain entered the chat as soon as we took our bikes off the rack. It was my first time really hammering in these conditions. Only mistake and wouldn’t have really changed anything other than position off the bike potentially… I missed a turn badly and had to stop altogether just to turn around with wet pavement on the shoulder...

2025 APPLE MULTISPORT FESTIVAL PREVIEW - Are you thinking about doing the Apple Du or Apple Tri? It's happening on Sunday, and it's not only a great event in itself, it's a perfect opportunity to knock off some rust before the outdoor tri season launches in earnest on June 1 at Buffalo. *

Who is currently enrolled in this year's Apple? 2024 Tri winner AMY WOOLSEY is returning, as are a plethora of usual suspects that typically rock in theier respective AGs, e.g. MARY DEEG, LISA HINES, JEFF GILMER, ALYSSA KNESE (pronounced Ken-ay-zee) just to name a few. If men's tri winner, perennial Minneota Triathlete of the Year PRESTON YOUNGDAHL, doesn't return, SPENCER SYVERTSON will immediately move into the favored position. Syvertson was nominated in three MMH categories last season: Triathlete of the Year, Performance of the Year and Most Improved. He should receive a good push from BRIAN STORHAUG, who like Spencer, is from Alexandria on Sunday...

David, Apple & Lifeguards...UPDATED!

DAVID KOPPEL - In July of 2023, David Koppel, 2021 Minnesota Triathlete of the Year, suffered a  tri career-threatening bike accident. His recovery and ultimate return to the sport he loves as a participant (he is also a coach) has been long and arduous. But he's back now. Not all the way back, but it appears he may return to full strength before the 2025 season is over. His first race since the accident happened last weekend at the rainy Gulf Coast 70.3 in Panama City, Florida, where he placed 17th overall / 3rd 35-39. Congrats, David!

APPLE MULTISPORT FESTIVAL - Apple, America's oldest and arguably most prestigious non-championship duathlon, will celebrate its 43rd anniversary next Sunday at it's great new venue at Sartell High School. For the...

Agreeing With Spencer...

Tinman Intermediate Race Report - Last week, Spencer Syvertson wrote a post for MN Tri News about how he loves small Minnesota triathlons, and how the U of M Morris’ Tinman triathlon is a great rust-buster event to kickstart your racing season. I couldn’t agree more. The Tinman tri has sprint (450 yds – 12 mile – 5 k) and olympic (1100 yds – 19 mile – 10 k) distance events that both feature a pool swim followed by an outdoor bike and run. It’s a well-run, small town event. I’ve done the sprint two times in the past, and this year I wanted to see how I could do at the longer distance.

The swim was pretty straightforward. I glanced at the race clock right before flipping for the first 50 and saw :28… whoops. After taking it out way too fast, I settled in and went through the motions. Hit the wall in 13:47, jumped out of the pool, and made my way to T1 just outside the pool doors.
